Reflections on Home: Multifunctional Furnishings Built for Comfort, from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams

With the weather cooling—and most of us spending more time in our own spaces than ever before—we’re particularly charmed by the idea of furnishings made by “Artisans of Comfort.”

That’s what furniture maker Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams calls their team of skilled, multi-generation artisans. Since its founding over 30 years ago, the North Carolina-based furniture maker has prioritized its commitment to quality and sincerity through American craftsmanship, to sustainability and respect for the environment and community, and to defining home as a place of health and comfort. (Watch the story of one of their master upholsterers, who is training the next generation of artisans, here.)

It’s an ethos that feels all the more important now that our homes are being reimagined to play multiple roles. Home is our gathering space, workspace, dining-in space, and relaxation space; our place to be together or to recharge with a few quiet moments alone; our sanctuary and refuge and centers for meaningful well-being. And, with that, every piece of furniture seems to be taking on new and added importance. All the better if furnishings are flexible—if a table can transform from a work-at-home command center to a place for the family to gather at the end of the day. Then the way something looks and the way it works can combine to bring elevated benefit and enjoyment.

This is the intention behind MG+BW’s Fall 2020 collection. Each piece is designed with multi-functionality and comfort in mind for embracing this new at-home life. And all the upholstery—from sofas to sectionals, chairs, benches, and beds—is, as always, made in the USA with eco-conscious manufacturing and packaging and hundreds of options for customization available, too.

Take a look at a few favorites from the collection.

Haywood Sofa and Merritt Cocktail Table from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Above: The Haywood Sofa, shown here in rich “boulevard auburn,” a performance velvet, is equal parts sturdy construction and sumptuous softness, with a low-slung design, hypoallergenic down-alternative back cushions, and “sink-in style.” Alongside is the Aiden Leather Chair, a standout of the MG+BW Classics Collection, a limited-edition re-release of some of the company’s most iconic pieces from the past 30 years, and the Danish modern-inspired Merritt Cocktail Table.
Laguna Chair from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Above: The new Laguna Chair has a sustainably sourced, heirloom-quality teak frame and a Scandinavian spirit; the generous cushions are available in over 575 fabrics and 40 leathers.
Gigi Tall Back Swivel Chairs from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Above: Arranged together or used solo, the Gigi Tall Back Swivel Chairs, shown in Sunbrella performance fabric, make the perfect spot for gathering or for curling up with a book. The Soleil Cocktail Table is shown in white with a silver-leaf interior (and is also available in other finishes).
Cooper Chaise from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Above: Add a Cooper Chaise to a corner of the bedroom or living area and you have a ready-made retreat for a bit of calm and quiet. This one is shown in “fern”-hued velvet, paired with the sculptural Addie Side Table and Addie Pull-up Table in bronze and the hand-knotted Disha Rug (one of four new rugs made in collaboration with sustainable rug maker Obeetee).
Parsons Dining Table and Remy Chairs from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Above: An example of the collection’s multifunctional, completely customizable offerings: The Essential Parsons Dining Table is available in three sizes (60-inch, 76-inch, or 96-inch rectangle), four metal finishes (brushed brass, brushed stainless, pewter, and polished stainless, shown), and three tops (white quartz with or without veining and gray quartz) to suit any style and need. Choose the small version for a dining table that’s also easily used as a desk or a larger design for at-home family dinners. It’s shown with the Remy Dining Chair, available in matching finishes.
Allure Desk from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Above: The Allure Desk—shown here with a dark smoked eucalyptus top and brass base—has a slim profile but a generous surface and creates an efficient, good-looking work-from-home setup in any room.
Anaya Rug from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Above: A glimpse of the new rugs on offer: the hand-knotted, 100 percent wool Anaya Rug from the Obeetee collection (hanging; shown in paprika and also available in indigo), the stain-resistant Omni Performance Rug (made with fibers spun from recycled bottles, shown on floor at right), and the Grainger Rug (on floor at left). The Will (left) and Aiden chairs, featured in rich Italian leather, are from the MG+BW Classics Collection.
Yves Bench from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Above: And the Yves Bench is a tribute to the centuries-old craft of blacksmithing, with a hand-forged, one-of-a-kind wrought-iron frame handmade by metalsmiths in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Its uses are many, from a sitting spot at the end of a bed or in a living area to a place to put on shoes in an entryway.
